Quality improvement refers to the systematic use of tried and tested tools, techniques and methodologies. These can be applied to improving quality and outcomes, increasing productivity and reducing costs, for patients as well as for corporate and administrative functions.

There are many examples across the NHS which show that even relatively small-scale improvement initiatives can lead to significant benefits. The potential benefit is even greater if quality improvement tools, techniques and methodologies are applied across organisations and systems.

The application of quality improvement approaches should be underpinned by fostering a positive culture.

Julia’s experience

Julia has supported over 50 healthcare organisations with quality improvement training, coaching, and hands-on support.

Julia’s quality improvement roles include, but are not limited to:

  • National: Department of Health and Social Care
  • Regional: AQuA (Advancing Quality Alliance) and AHSN NENC (Academic Health Science Network for North East and North Cumbria)
  • Organisational: Working with Trusts, community services, GP practices, and universities (including being an Academic Tutor for the Postgraduate Certificate in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement at the University of Sunderland)

Julia continues to keep her quality improvement skills up to date, and most recently has been trained by the IHI (Institute for Healthcare Improvement). Julia has also been trained by organisations including AQuA, Lancaster University, and Unipart Expert Practices, covering a wide range of approaches including lean thinking, improvement science, and the IHI Breakthrough Series.

For Julia, quality improvement underpins everything she does, and has done so since she was first introduced to this way of working over 15 years ago.

Julia’s support offer
